Welcome to the Anthropist
Welcome to the inaugural post of The Anthropist, a magazine dedicated to exploring the dynamics of leadership, business and society today, from a thoughtful perspective. It is my personal thoughts and creation, so I do appreciate you as existing contacts and fellow travellers, being willing to ‘subscribe’ for free and getting regular but not overwhelming insights from me, as the founder of www.anthropy.uk. I aim to share thinking around leadership and the circumstances we face, not just as a position of power and status, but as a profound responsibility to those around you and society at large. My thinking is based on over forty years of leadership experience, from my ten years of military service, to my time running initiatives for King Charles III, through to leading businesses internationally and my philanthropy and campaigning.
My first reflection is that in today’s world, we are often bombarded with the term of being a "thought leader." It has become a buzzword, a badge of honour for those who seek to command attention and make bold proclamations, it has at times even been used about myself, in the context of purpose and business - but as leaders race to stay ahead in the relentless churn of information, I believe we can run the risk of losing sight of what truly matters and can risk falling into simply becoming something else, namely a “reactive leader”. As a society, we often sacrifice understanding for speed and in doing so, undermine our ability to make well informed decisions, lead effectively and ultimately be the best we can be.
This is where I aim personally to move to become a Thoughtful Leader and encourage others to embrace the concept of Thoughtful Leadership, which forms part of my personal endeavour through www.anthropy.uk, to encourage leaders from all sectors, to play the very best they can in the future of Britain and its role in the world.
I believe being thoughtful is even more crucial than ever now, with the rise of polarisation across society, the complexities of organisational leadership, national societal and economic issues and global challenges of poverty, climate change and authoritarianism. Thoughtful leadership is about thinking more carefully, rejecting the rush to judge, or initiating ill informed social posts, commentaries or decisions. Committing to acquiring genuine knowledge and reflecting before making decisions, is an act of personal empowerment. It allows one to recognise the long-term implications of our actions and reject the pressure from others to behave as they want you to. It encourages an understanding that leadership is not just about the immediate impact, but about shaping a longer term impact that is better for all.
The challenges we face today in the UK (my particular concern) whether in business, politics, or society at large, cannot be solved by quick fixes, surface-level solutions, soundbites and ill-informed rhetoric. We require leaders willing to engage in deeper, reflective thinking; leaders who prioritise understanding over expediency, and who are not afraid to say, "I don’t know yet", when faced with complex issues or questions.
In The Anthropist, I will explore topics which reflect or inspire thoughtful leadership and the issues and challenges of the day. I will focus on the importance of taking the time to understand different perspectives, the value of cultivating a wide base of knowledge, and the need to resist the temptation of easy answers.
Our society is at a crossroads, we sense it on our streets, hear it from politicians and see it in our media. As leaders (all Anthropists are leaders, whether in our workplaces, communities, or families) we should choose a path that places thoughtfulness over haste, depth over superficiality, and long-term impact over short-term gains.
Through The Anthropist, I hope to inspire you to embrace new thinking and the mindset of thoughtful leadership, to question the status quo and to strive for a more considered, informed, and humane approach to leading and living.
I look forward to you joining me on this journey. Together we can all explore how we can lead with intention, wisdom, and care, and in doing so, help shape a society that values leadership that is thoughtful, rather than reactive. With my thanks for reading,
.
